The Centre for the Study of Liver Disease (CSF) is a structure which unites a molecular based research activity with a clinical activities of the Clinical Liver Unit. This type of alliance which is infrequent though not unique in the Italian hepatological reality, allows the identification within the CSF of an operational example of molecular medicine, in this case, hepatological medicine.
The Centre displays expertise in the field
of advanced technologies for the study of physiological and pathological
aspects of the liver. In particular, the thrust of the CSF is into the study
of molecular transport mechanisms of various organic anions (bilirubin and
MRI contrast agents) and of bilirubin cellular damage mechanisms at cerebral
and placental levels.
Associated with this research activity, the Centre carries out investigations
into the molecular pathology of certain liver diseases, amongst which are
hepatic carcinoma and the congenital syndromes with non-conjugated hyperbilirubinemia.
The Centre for Liver Studies is active in a number of research directions:
The CSF also carries out intense training activities by means of study bursaries
and scholarships and specific specialisation programmes at the national,
European and international levels.
The management of the CSF is entrusted to an especially constituted technical
scientific committee.
The administrative management is carried out by a mixed public-private company
with an autonomous board whose characteristics must mirror the parties making
up the mixed company.
As evidenced by the projects, the CSF interacts scientifically with the national and international scientific and clinical bodies:
