Why the CSF?
- Given the great prevalence of liver disease (see CCSF),
it is important to define the molecular bases of the illnesses and hence
to optimise diagnosis and therapy.
- Knowledge of the structure of the liver and mechanisms associated with
its disease allow the definition of more specific and sensitive diagnostic
methods, leading to earlier diagnosis and/or prevention.
- Notable progress at the basic research level has been made into the ways
of damage by external toxic agents and viruses, and information is being
collected about the factors (genetic and environmental) which affect the
natural history of the disease.
- The techniques of basic research must be applied to clinical research in
order to optimise the results.
