STUDY OF THE PREVALENCE, INCIDENCE AND NATURAL HISTORY OF CHRONNIC LIVER DISEASE IN THE ITALIAN POPULATION
The Dionysos project, terminated in 1993, examined
the prevalence of chronic liver diseases in two municipal areas in northern
Italy, Campogalliano (MO) and Cormons (GO).
With the intention of extending the study to the entire nation, the Dionysos
2 project was started in 1999, following the same methodologies carried out
in 1990-91. The Scope of this study is to evaluate the prevalence
and determine the incidence of chronic liver disease. All this allows identification
of differential diffusion categories, but above all, this project allows diffusion
prediction to enable curative and preventative action. Data
collection has taken place in appropriately set up out patient facilities,
each of which having a research team of 6 highly trained personnel.
The Dionysos 2 project has been realised thanks to both Public and Private
financing of the Foundation for Liver Studies (such as the Emilia Romagna and
Friuli Venezia Giulia Health Authorities, the municipal areas involved, the
Asl and others as well).
The results of the Dionysos 2 Project are still in the publication phase
even though the first data have already appeared in the July 2005 issue of
Hepatology
