Letter to the Mayor of Cormons

The Dionysos Project out-patients facility at Cormons will soon be closing as a result of factors which have nothing to do with the wishes of the Foundation for Study of Liver Disease and its operators.

During these 15 years, as well as offering a top rate specialised hepatological service,  the out-patients facility has enabled the carrying out of the only population study in the world on the prevalence and incidence of liver disease. On the one hand, this has allowed identification of previously unknown changes in liver function, and on the other to export the name of Cormons around the world, not only for its wine but also for the results of the Dionysos Project.

The Dionysos Project has allowed important epidemiological information to be obtained which has generated not only prestigious scientific publication but also many data which are used by the regional health system for short and long term planning.

This study cannot have an outcome similar to that of the analogous Framingham study on cardiovascular diseases. We have been hosted by the ASS 2 Health Structure which has recently decided to no longer make use of our specialist activities even though it was at no cost, being financed by the by funding from the Health Committee and the Cassa di Risparmio Foundation of Gorizia.

However, the Foundation for the Study of Liver Diseases and its personnel wish to thank the protagonists of this of this project: the population of Cormons and all the health and administrative personnel of the health district of Cormons. Without the  effective participation of these individuals, the health and scientific results would not have been attained in such a brilliant manner.

As indicated above, the project was made possible by external financial contributions, amongst which that of CARIGO has been the most important, and to whom we therefore express our heartfelt thanks.

In conclusion we wish to note that the people examined at the Cormons’ outpatients may, if they wish, continue to be followed at our Centre for Clinical Liver Studies at the Cattinara Hospital of Trieste. We sincerely hope that the continuation of these studies which has allowed us to follow certain individuals with mutual benefit for more than 15 years will not be interrupted.

Finally, we wish to thank the municipal administrations who have involved themselves and their support given in all phases of the project.

Leaving it to the Mayor and the municipal administration to decide on the best means of distributing this letter, we take pleasure in using this opportunity to extend to you our most cordial greetings.
