Saving an olive grove can save lives. This is the strong message launched by the VIII edition of the "Walk among the Olive Trees", an event promoted by the National Association of Oil Cities in collaboration with LILT (Italian League for the Fight against Tumors), FIF (Italian Liver Foundation Onlus) and UNPLI (National Union of Pro Loco of Italy), with the patronage of the MAECI, Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security.
The objective is twofold: on the one hand, to enhance the olive heritage and on the other, to raise awareness of the importance of extra virgin olive oil (EVO) in a balanced diet to prevent tumors and liver diseases.
Sunday October 27, over 100 Cities of Oil in 18 Italian regions will host trekking, bike or horseback excursions, EVO oil tastings, visits to oil mills and numerous activities for all ages. But this year there is an important novelty: A fundraising campaign to support the FIF “O-liver” research project, whose aim is to study the beneficial effects of EVO oil in the prevention of complications of fatty liver, an increasingly widespread disease.

“The fundraising represents a unique opportunity to support innovative research” – says the president of the Fondazione Italiana Fegato NPO, Decio Ripandelli – “which aims to better understand how EVO oil can help prevent and manage fatty liver disease. Thanks to the collaboration between Città dell’Olio and Fondazione Italiana Fegato Onlus, the “O-liver” project will study the molecular mechanisms through which extra virgin olive oil acts on liver cells, contributing to the development of new therapies”.
“This edition of the Walk among the Olives will also be the occasion to present our bill against the abandonment of traditional olive growing. But, above all,” declares Michele Sonnessa, President of the Cities of Oil – “for the first time we will link the event to a fundraiser for scientific research. The ‘O-liver’ project shows that small gestures, such as supporting this initiative, can make a difference, not only for the protection of our olive heritage, but also for our health”.
“Thanks to the collaboration between Città dell’Olio and Fondazione Italiana Fegato NPO – explains the Scientific Director of FIF Claudio Tiribelli– and following the awareness campaign called “O-liver” from a virtuous combination of the words “Olive” and “Liver”, this project aims to provide preliminary in vitro evidence and to clarify the molecular mechanisms through which EVO exerts its beneficial effects on liver cells, contributing to the development of innovative therapeutic strategies for the management of MASLD”.
Contributing to the fundraising for the “O-liver” project means not only supporting scientific research, but also actively participating in the fight against an increasingly widespread liver disease. Thanks to this initiative, we can all make a concrete contribution to our health and to the protection of a heritage that is a symbol of culture, tradition and well-being.
LILT and FIF confirm the importance of EVO oil as an ally in the prevention of numerous pathologies. Francesco Schittulli, President of LILT, underlines that “the protection of the Italian olive-growing landscape is closely linked to the promotion of health, since quality EVO oil is an integral part of the Mediterranean Diet, recognized worldwide for its beneficial effects.”
