L’obesità è un fattore determinante per lo sviluppo della steatosi epatica (il cosiddetto fegato grasso), la quale costituisce una delle principali cause di malattie epatiche. Il fegato grasso ha uno sviluppo cronico ed è considerato benigno e reversibile. Tuttavia, questa patologia può progredire verso stadi più gravi, quali la steatoepatite con o senza fibrosi oppure l’insorgenza della cirrosi epatica e il tumore al fegato.
Ad oggi, la biopsia epatica continua ad essere l’unico metodo affidabile per la diagnosi della steatoepatite e della fibrosi epatica (stadi ancora reversibili), pertanto esiste un‘urgente necessità di sviluppare nuove tecniche, non invasive, per la diagnosi clinica.
L’obiettivo della nostra ricerca è l’identificazione di potenziali biomarcatori e bersagli terapeutici coinvolti nello sviluppo e nella progressione della malattia epatica.
